[world-cruising] Rudder fatigue

Subject: [world-cruising] Rudder fatigue

Hi, I have just finished fixing my ruder. The original construction included
four (fingers) 1/2 SS rods about 15" long passed through 1/2 " holes in the
rudder shaft. These kept the ruder blade moving when the shaft tuned.
All four rods had snapped off at the shaft junction.( They were not welded
just loose fit in the holes).
I replaced the rods and welded them in place and added welded on two 2" x
3/16" strap on each side of the shaft next to each rod. These joined at the
aft end to form a 15" V.
I had to cut out the GRP and foam around the old rods. That has been filled
with "bog" and GRPed over and made good.
My boat is a 1977 and the welder tells me this type of repair is not
uncommon on many different types of boats. It is just caused by fatigue.
Anyone else with an older boat should give this some consideration before
taking a long voyage.
I fellow member of my yacht club added extra SS "fingers" to the rudder of
his Adams 41 that he is preparing for the Melbourne Osaka two hander.

Regards

Barry
