There also are fixed bridges in the Chicago River that will require you to
unstep your mast for the voyage south to the Mississippi.
The Great Lakes has a relatively short sailing season. Ice can exist
between November and April. It's a challenge to enter, cruise, and exit the
Lakes within one season.
