Hello,

Avoid the Hudson? That would be a shame. Go through Lake Champlain and take
in the Thousand Islands on your way to Lake Ontario! That trip is one of the
best in North America. Seven foot draft is not a problem, the New York canals
are good for twice that, and locks are 300' x 45'. If you don't want to
unstep the mast, you'll have to come in through the St. Lawrence River from
the Atlantic. I don't think you'll enjoy bucking the current in the
Mississippi, but I've not been there.

From New York City, enter the St. Lawrence via the Champlain Canal (north
from Albany thence through the Richelieu River), or through the Western
(Erie) Canal (westward from Albany and into Lake Ontario through the Oswego
cutoff, or you can go all the way to Buffalo and Lake Erie).

Either of those routes will require mast removal as the bridge clearances are
about 15 feet. Having done it, I can say that it's not a big deal; the people
at marinas who do this on a regular basis are much better at it that most
boatyards and it only takes a couple of hours from start to finish. If you
come up the Hudson, one of the best places is Hop-O-Nose Marine at Catskill.

Try these links for more info, and be sure to get Skipper Bob's books for
cruising anywhere around the US east coast, inland lakes and rivers.
