Subject: [world-cruising] Question re navigability

Hi,
Can anyone tell us how navigable the Mississippi is, and the Lakes system
into it from the North? My husband and I will be sailing out of South Africa
and would like at some stage to enter the Hudson at New York and get through
the Great Lakes down past Chicago to Rock Island, and then sail later from
Rock Island south through the Mississippi to the Gulf. We have heard that
the canal systems off the Hudson into the Lakes requires unstepping the mast
(we are keel-stepped so no way; we have a 43' Gitana with a comparatively
very tall mast ... also, we draw about 7 feet). The alternative would be to
sail north FROM the Gulf - is that possible, all the way to the Lakes, thus
avoiding the Hudson (if that's where the issues would be)?
Any thoughts, please? Thanks!
Richest blessings,
Jodie Holloway (South Africa)
