I hope you'll have another opportunity to see the Navman demonstrated. As I
mentioned, the day I looked at them was very overcast - no sun at all...and
the display was very washed out and dull looking. As a result, I eliminated
Navman from consideration. The Garmin 182C is more expensive than the
Navman 5500, but the difference in display performance more than justifies
the added cost IMO.
There may have been several reasons for the poor display when I saw it.
Since it was being demonstrated by the manufacturer, I would expect him to
make every effort to make his products look their best. My conclusion -
perhaps faulty - is that the unit I saw was showing at its best in the
conditions of the day. FWIW, the friend who originally suggested Navman
(because of its price) also reached the same conclusions; he decided on the
Garmin 182C as well.
