Well Bryan you made me wonder as, even though I had been informed that the
Navman was the cheapest unit, I had never seen the units operating. The
particular salesman had assured me that it was as good as the others; the
power to half their display rack was faulty so they were unable to
demonstrate it.

I have some knowledge of LCD displays and you prompted me to recall that the
sort of poor display in daylight has been a feature of many colour LCD until
the last year or so. The previous colour models were not daylight viewable
and relied on the backlighting for viewing and as soon as they were in
daylight they washed out. I have just seen the same thing on a Raytheon CP
that was great down below but poor in daylight; this was a two year old
unit. The latest Raymarine model, I have been informed, is brilliant in
daylight; again hearsay! I dragged out the brochure from the pile I have
recently collected and looked at the Navman 2001 model and the 2002 model
and indeed the display has changed from supertwist LCD to TFT type LCD ( in
2002 model). The TFT is transflective which means that it is quite good in
ambient light AND when backlit. This is something that you should look out
for although all new models will probably be TFT from now on from all
manufacturers. The same change has happened to laptop PCs and many are now
fitted with TFT for daylight viewing.

I should point out that I have no association with any CP company and anyway
I would be suspicious of anything that comes from a country that has a sheep
to people ratio of 20:1 LOL

Just a few more thoughts FWIW

Cheers

A friend suggested Navman, so I looked carefully at them at the Annapolis
Boat Show. As compared to the Garmin units, their color was very washed
out
when displayed outdoors (on an overcast day!).

Their electronics may be wonderful, but their display was among the worst
I
  saw. HTH.
