I certainly hope everyone is using paper charts. I do.
The chart plotter, like every other piece of navigation gear, is a tool. My
sole purpose in getting one was not to replace paper charts, but to help me
navigate unmarked passages, especially at night, at times when I'm driving
and am unable to fully concentrate on navigation. I've learned enough about
my own (lack of) skills to know that "sailor's eye" has occasionally gotten
me into trouble. Going aground in the Chesapeake Bay is no big deal, as the
bottoms are mud and I haven't ever damaged the boat. Elsewhere, though, the
consequences of my failures could be much more severe. I think the
chartplotter should help supplement my paper chart navigation.
Otherwise, I prefer paper charts.
