Lex,
Fortunately for many, Iridium was reorganized and received a nice US military
contract (read:bailout) about 3 years ago.
I bought the 9505 (smaller, waterproof, data-ready) phone last year. You can
get one today for under US$1300.00. You can buy a refurb 9500 data-ready
phone for about half that, but they are clunky by comparison. The "Marine
Kit" which gives you a docking station/outside antenna w/
cable/charger/handset/data port that you simply clip the 'phone into was
another US$1500.00 With this kit it functions just like a desk telephone. I
see that they are less expensive now.
I bought mine from the Satphone store, and use Stratos as a provider
($20.00/month.) Ask for a boat show special! http://www.satphonestore.com/
One caution: if you leave the phone where it may be stolen, remove the SIM
card so it can't be used. Otherwise you'll get to pay for the thief's calls!
Regards,
John
