Hello Lex,

I have an Iridium satphone. The cost was reasonable. I can use it from the
boat like a regular phone and send/receive email with it at 9600 or better
anytime I like. I can call my friends for less cost than going ashore and
using a land line (if you can even find one that works.) It costs even less
to call cruising friends who also have Iridium, and saves messing with the
SSB which is always a hassle. Another benefit is that, having programmed the
local police and coastguard telephone numbers, I have quick access to local
law enforcement and/or SAR no matter which island (I sail in the
Windwards/Leewards) I'm sailing near or ashore on. I joke with my friends
that if I fall overboard I could hit the appropriate speeddial and ask the
local coastguard to come and get me, but in fact there's no reason that
wouldn't work.
