Subject: RE: [worldcruising] Necessary Books?

Janice,
I would voice a second opinion for Nigel Calder's Boatowner's Mechanical and
Electrical Manual and his book specifically on diesels--Marine Diesel
Engines. Both are excellent books--very well written and illustrated. I
found them both very aplicable to the our auxiliary and other systems we
have on our boat. Both books have very helpful sections on troubleshooting
when things inevitably go wrong. Mr. Calder has gotten us out of more than
one bind.

I found Nigel Calder's Boatowners Electrical and Mechanical guide a great
general how to set up or fix something. It got my starter motor going by
telling me where to whack it with a hammer.
The Steve & Lina Dashews' Encylopedia of Offshore Cruising is good but
expensive.
Then there are the many accounts of trips and big storms. Either they paint
a rosy picture or scare the pants off you. But both styles are worthwhile
reading. Go browse the library first.
I read Rescue in the Pacific which describles the storm and boats in 1994 on
the way north from NZ.
Jimmy Cornells cruising world cruising guide and routes books are good
planning books but lack the detail needed to cruise a country. His website
is worth looking at www.noonsite.com

Colin
