I think it depends a little on where you are. In the Bahamas they
want to know about (whisper) guns and ammo, and they also want to know
about dinghys and motors. You have to give a value for the dinghys
etc. They also want to know if there have been any deaths of mice or
rats aboard.
Sometimes there are regulations regarding pets. Dogs and cats can't
(as of the last I heard) go ashore in England for instance. I think
sometimes in some places they want to know about bikes and/or radios
in some places. And of course they want to see everyone's passport.
For the rest it has been some phrase like stores for yacht in transit
or something like that. Although there may be restrictions on how
much of something (meat - esp beef but I think also for Cuba chicken?
or eggs? can't remember exactly) can be brought in, or if it can be
brought in at all. Tobacco, liquor and of course drugs come under
that category.
No they normally don't question food items if it is normal amounts and
not for resale.
