I'd have to recommend Navichart, Andras. It ain't free but for about
290Euro you get close to every chart in the World, The program to run the
show costs 180Euro.
They have yearly updates that you have to subscribe to keep the program
running. You don't need to subscribe yearly if you plug a GPS into the
system.
There's a subscription fee of about 165Euro per annum which seems minimal
for what
you get when you look at the expensive value added, chopped up charting
programs around today.
They run an continuous auction on Ebay which is where I found them and they
offered me
quite a big discount on the advertised price after a bit of talking. It's a
barebones program without ships log etc but it's done in an editable
Vector format. Colour is good and I particularly like the night view
screen.
They show shore based objects like Customs, Towers,Post Office's etc
and you can download a demo at their site.
There's about twenty scales for each chart.
From a World chart right down to harbour charts . Even covers lakes.
It has the usual Route planing and Nav functions and you can load it onto as
many hard drives as you like without needing the CD to run it. On the down
side you need a bigger monitor. They recommend 21" with a Pentium 3 600MHZ
I use a 17" P2 450MHZ and can read the depths ok but the refresh rate takes
a few seconds with all the options turned on.
