There are plenty of boats that are only 8' beam. I know a couple who circumnavigated in a Compass 28 that would have easily fitted in a container.

  Ocean shipping containers are 8'6" wide and between 8'6" and 9'6" tall. With
  that little width, you'd be looking at a very small boat. Some shipping
  companies do have open containers and some are just the bottom platform. If
  they stack you on the top you could possible overhang on the width.
