Hi John
I assume they mean power to charge a 12V battery. with a greater voltage
at 8 amps and 12 volt that gives 96 Watt. If this rune for 24 hours this gives approx. 2 Kwatt.hours
of stored energy. Of course the machine would have to use may be 17 Volt and use at lot more energy to store 2 KWH. No system is 100% efficient.
The unit that was available in Oz produced 15 to 17 amps at boat speed.
I am going to visits an outboard wrecker soon and see if I can get a long shaft OB arm I can hang a 14" prop to and mount an alternator. I will look for an alternator is one of the alternative energy shops in town.
I used a 96 Watt solar panel. but that was not enough for what I would like to have used. Wind generators don't produce enough when sailing down wind. And I don't like wasting fuel by running the main engine to top up the batteries. I could get more solar panels but I don't want to look like a Christmas tree.
Regards
Barry

Hi Barry,
Thanks for the URL. I read the web page with interest, but I must say that
their statement, "...the Aquair produces 8 amps (100 watt-hours per hour)..."
made me nervous. Watt-hours per hour? I don't think so! That, plus their
statement "In ideal conditions, the UW puts out 8 amps at 12 VDC..." concerns
me too, as it smacks of the same marketing tomfoolery that some windgen
makers indulge in. I keep hoping that the alternative energy folks will
standardize on output ratings of 14V or 13.2V or something more more
realistic.
Their numbers, at 6mph (more realistic for a cruising boat) translate into
5.2A at 12 volts. As we all know, you can't charge a 12V battery with 12V,
so, assuming that the device will actually put out, say, 14V (saving some for
Vdrop) we now have only 4.4A.
Good sailing,
John
