David,

This group has always been uneven in participation as long as I've
been with it (and I started out on onegroups, went to e-group and now
on yahoo). The problem is that by the nature of the topic, people
that are actually cruising are unlikely to have email lists as one of
their top priority. Therefore you get wannabes, and folks who've just
come back or are getting ready to go again. Or folks like me who just
like to natter on the computer <g>

Other EMail Lists

There are other email lists, some of them on yahoo - the
world_women_cruisers list (also on yahoo and started IIRC by the SO of
the guy who started this group) is one of them and they don't mind if
men participate. There's also the workaboard list (for people that
work from the boat) and the SafeCruising list both of them among the
least active of lists, and TheDingyDock which seems to be a one
person's web page kind of thing. The ChesapeakeCruising list is a
less active list about a specific area. All these are on yahoo.

I also participate in the live-aboard list which is one of the best
(IMHO), which is run out of Un of Toronto. This list is one of the
few lists that you are either subscribed or not, and you can't set the
list to nomail if you go away. It is a VERY active list with a pretty
large membership, even some people who are cruising and a lot who are
actually living aboard. But they will let you join if you don't even
have a boat - there's no membership committee to check you out or
anything.

Another one is the Yacht-L list, which is similar but run from
Holland, and tends to be less people living aboard and more people
international and on the west coast of the US and a lot of them
interested in racing and/or cruising. An active list.

In addition there is an email group run by SAIL magazine at
http://members.sailnet.com/email_lists/index.cfm which has
geographical and boat manufacturer type lists. Some of these lists
are phantom lists though. For instance they've listed a CSY list, and
there's no list really there.

There are also various one manufacturer lists (other than on sailnet),
like one I belong to which addressed CSYs on topica.com (which also
has a lot of other lists) and there are trawler lists etc. Do a
Google search and you will find them. (do an advanced search
otherwise you will get a whole bunch of non-relevant sites)

There are also some newsgroups - the one I mostly use is
rec.boats.cruising. A lot of static on the newsgroups, but sometimes
some interesting discussions.

Newsletters:

These are often in print. The primary one for us is the SSCA
Bulletin, which also comes (previous issues) on disk.

I am assuming that you know all about Cruising World, SAIL, Sailing
World, Ocean Navigator, Practical Sailor, Practical Boater, Offshore,
and most of the other big(ger) players in the world of sailing
magazines but there is also, Good Old Boat, which has both a website
and I think may also be electronic in addition to paper copy, and
Living-Aboard magazine (AFAIK is print only). I also get Coastal
Cruising when it is being printed (seems to go on hiatus
periodically), and it is a wonderful magazine when you can get it.

Another good magazine, but not exactly on topic is Home Power for
electrical stuff and living off the grid - a lot is applicable to
boats.

This should give you enough to get started with.
