You don't say where you are or whether you're using a Marine SSB or Ham rig.
However to test your signal, the best thing to do is try to join a Maritime
Mobile Cruising net and ask how your signal is.
I've compiled a list of Marine SSB and cruising Ham net at:
http://www.mouseherder.com/xapic/freq.html
I'd find one that fits your time schedule and mode (marine ssb or ham),
listen in for a day or two to see how the net works, and then check in.
But be careful to observe net etiquette. Underway and weather nets are
particularly schedule driven, but most make time at the end of the net or
just before the net for people to chitchat and get radio checks.
