I would not leave the mast bare.

Yes, aluminium oxide is a natural developing compound when bare aluminum
is exposed to air; however, it is black in color and is easily wiped off,
especially by your sails.

I'd shoot it with a yellow zinc chromate primer which is designed
specifically for aluminium and then paint it with LP.
