Subject: [worldcruising] Mast Refurbishment Project

At last some progress. After having the mast sitting on blocks in the
front yard for a month and not quite knowing where to start something
has finally happened.
We have started to strip the paint back.
I wasn't sure if the original paint was 1-pack or 2-pack. The
recommendation was to just sand it back, etch prime the bare spots and
then hit it with a couple of coats of 2-pack.
The danger being that if the original was only 1-pack then we'd be in
strife.
I decided to try some domestic paint stripper on of the spreaders.
After only 2 mins there was lots of bubbling. Doesn't sound like 2-pack
does it.
We are now tackling the mast in sections. Two coats of paint stripper,
a plastic scraper and finish off with fine steel wool and it comes up
real shiny.
The question now arises. Is it necessary to paint it at all? I have
heard that bare aluminium oxidises very rapidly and once a coat of
oxidisation has formed then it is protected from corrosion.
The mast is 25 years old and has been painted since new. But I don't
really want to go to the expense and trouble of 2-packing it if its not
essential. Functionality is more important than aesthetics and I don't
mind the colour of oxidised aluminium.
Any words of wisdom guys?
