You can leave Panama at any time. There is no cyclone season in the Eastern South Pacific
You have to arrive in Panama before June to avoid the hurricane in the Caribbian but you can arrive any time after that season (may be October).
Many boats leave Panama around Feb/March including the "Europa" rallies which my son did in '94.
Feb/March is the peak season so you will have plenty of company and possibility crew swapping.
When the rally goes through the canal they fill the lock with sailboats. Instead of just three of four yachts behind a big ship. At that time of the year births may be in short supply.
Arriving in the Marquesas in March is OK the West Pacific cyclone season continues until April but the Marquesas so far north that they don't get much effected. There is a rally from NZ back to Tonga each winter for the cruisers to continue cruising in May. It has been hit by cyclones even that late.
If you stay North of 10 S there is a lot to see in the Marquesas ,Penrhyn and Kiribatti before heading South to Tahiti etc.
As a university teacher my vacation time is Nov. to March. I am thinking of cruising from Samoa starting November. I am debating the virtues of north near the equator say Wallace Group, Tuvalu and may be back to Fiji for storage. Or to run south via Tonga to NZ and then home.
I nearly got caught in a cyclone in November in 97 but there may net be so many if it is a "el nino" year
Regards
Barry

Thank you George and Barry for your advice and comments.
About the timing of the passage - yes I accept the absolute windows -
leave Panama before June or July and arrive into Auckland before
early November. But what is the earliest it is sensible to leave
Panama? I was intending to leave for the Galapogas around 1st
March. Assuming a slow passage (one week?) and the maximum allowed
time there (two weeks? - any updates on this?) that would mean
leaving for the French Marquesas around 21st March and arrival mid
April. Does this seem sensible or is it a little early?
Can anyone put me in touch with a source of photocopied US (or
Admiralty) paper charts for the crossing to New Zealand? Or does
anyone have charts and pilot books they would be willing to sell or
trade?
I have a set of C-Map NT cartidges for most of the Caribbean,
Venezuela, and the Western Caribbean coast from Cuba to Panama if any
one is interested.
Any other comments and views very welcome
