I'll try.

You should have a length of line (the control line) that goes from the port
side of your cockpit to a block located on your deck just aft of your
shrouds, to the boom brake, around the brake drum 3-4 times, out the
opposite side of the boom brake, to a block aft of your starboard shrouds,
and back to the starboard side of the cockpit.

You should have a method to secure both ends of the line - usually cleats.

You should have a method to tension the line from either side - a spare
winch or a block and tackle.

The boom brake works as both a vang and a preventer. If you already have a
separate vang, you can probably eliminate the tensioning requirements that I
mentioned in the above paragraph.

The brake works by applying tension to the control line. When you jibe, the
control line going around the brake drum works just like a winch - it holds
the boom in a backwinded position until the control line is eased. With
practice, you can learn to control the boom speed during jibes to a very
comfortable level.

Hope that helps.
