[worldcruising] Adding Lead To A Keel

Subject: [worldcruising] Adding Lead To A Keel

G'day,

I am about to re-attach my old bilge keels. Why they were taken off in the
first place is a long story so I won't go into it here. They were
originally a single half-inch plate but this time I want to add 4mm steel
plate on each side and shape them so they are 80mm wide at the top and 50mm
(the shape of the existing foot) at the bottom. I'll do this by welding the
steel plate to the existing foot and use it as a template.

This will give me hollow bilge keels with curved forward and aft ends,
tapering slightly from top to bottom. I've been advised by a marine
architect to put 100 kg of lead into each of the two bilge keels. Another
long story here but basically due to a shallow hull, I need weight for
stability. I also need to get my centre of floatation forward.

Question: What's the best way to add lead to steel keels?

Should I paint the surface of the steel before adding hot lead?

If not, how should I prepare the surface of the steel?

What about galvanic corrosion i.e. interaction between the two different
metals i.e. between the lead and mild steel?

Has anyone some advice about a good (simple) way to go about melting and
adding the lead?

Another idea proposed is to chop the lead ingots up using a chain-saw and
just add the lead in small lumps, then add bitumen pitch or tar to seal it
in. In fact, tar has been used in my main keel to secure lead ingots and
does a good job. I'm not sure this is the best way....
