Graham,

I can't hep you with your general queries re the new wiring etc., but HF
does NOT go inside your mast. From your SSB you cable to a
self-tuner/auto-tuner which is normally located inside the vessel, on
the transom, just under the deck. The antennae wire is then fed via a
feed-through insulator to the back stay that has had upper and lower
insulators fitted. This will give you best performance and best
radiation of the antennae. You also have to earth the SSB/tuner - but
that is a whole different kettle of fish.

All masts I have come across in our part of the world (South Africa),
have an internal channel in the extrusion to accommodate the wiring and
VHF co-ax. When new cables are pulled, most installations I have seen
have had rubber disks with a hole in the middle and with the cables
running through the disks and placed every few feet. A cable tie is
placed above and below each disk to keep the cables together and to stop
the disk moving when the bundle is pulled through the mast. This serves
two purposes - 1. to stop mast rattle and 2. to ease the tension of the
cables in-mast.

There are others on this NG who are far more experienced with doing
in-mast rewiring than myself and I am sure you will get a ton of
information on this subject.

A previous owner had installed a VHF aerial with the wire clipped to the
outside of the mast. We want to run this internally and make provision
for HF while we're at it. We'd also like to fit a masthead tricolour so
will need to add some wiring for that. I don't think our budget will
stretch to flash electronics at the masthead.
