Graham,

Most of the conduit I've seen is made from PVC (poly-vinyl chloride) and is
riveted to the mast. If you have the opportunity to look at a number of
masts, you'll probably notice several with a long line of rivets going
straight up. They hold the conduit.

You will probably want to make provisions for three different wires: VHF
antenna lead, tri-color lead, and masthead (steaming) light (probably
located on the front of the mast about 2/3 up from the deck). You might
want to run a small messenger line to pull down any new wires you'll run in
the future.

Do NOT run your HF antenna lead up the mast.

Keep in mind that the cables will stretch over time from their own weight.
One solution is to have a bundle made up of all the cables tied off to a
light piece of lanyard wire. Make an eye at in the wire at its top and
attach it at the top of the mast. The wire will prevent the electric cables
from stretching.
