121.5 is the aviation distress frequency, and scheduled flights (the heavy
metal) are *supposed* to monitor it in flight. If this monitoring actually
happens, the range of coverage is pretty good, given that they are up pretty
high and thus see a long way (VHF is line of sight), and you are somewhere
not too remote that there are no flights passing somewhere near overhead.
