[worldcruising] 406 EPIRB???

Subject: [worldcruising] 406 EPIRB???

I was wondering if I should buy a 406 epirb with integral GPS. ($979 @
Defender) I already have a good 121.5mhz unit and a Standard VHF with
DSC distress calling. I am about to sail south from Great Abaco,
Bahamas, but only within Bahamas, (on a Bristol 32) then back to
Florida, and I always take a crewperson. In this area, if I needed
rescue, who would hear and respond to:
1)VHF ch 16
2)VHF DSC distress call
3)121.5 epirb
4)406 epirb
So: Lots of boat and shore people have VHF, but may be out of range, or
not able to arrange rescue.
I am not sure who monitors DSC, in 2300 miles of cruising, mine has
never received a distress call.
I have never seen a boat with 121.5 receive capability, what is the
usable range of these? Who monitors?
Who monitors 406 epirb, do they dispatch to Bahamas?
