[worldcruising] Tying off Wheel

Subject: [worldcruising] Tying off Wheel

Hello All,

I have a "Hydrovane" wind vane which is an auxilliary rudder type. This
requires that the helm be fixed in order for the small auxilliary rudder to
do its stuff. The position that the helm is fixed varies according to wind
strength, point of sail, sail trim, weather helm etc so must be variable.
I've tried using rope etc to tie the wheel off but it is slow and awkward to
tie and adjust when sailing. The main problem though is the time it takes
to untie to avoid an obstacle. We have many craypots (lobster pots) with
floats in Western Australian waters that can entangle around keel, rudders,
props and auxilliary rudder blades. Usually by the time they are spotted
approx 50m (150 ft) and the ropes are untied they are virtually under the
boat. These craypots can be up to thirty miles off shore so it is not just
an inshore issue. Some people have suggested tightening the brake on the
wheel but mine does not work and I believe this is only for stationary
situations anyway as considerable stresses are involved.

I could probably make some complex affair to do the job but was enquiring
what other members have done to achieve this.

Hoping you can help.

Regards
Andrew Herwig
