First, what systems do you have to draw down your house bank? You need to
do an amp audit to determine what your daily amp usage is. If the only
thing you need to do is start your engine and run your VHF, then perhaps
your two group 24's are sufficient. You just need new (quality) batteries.
If, on the other hand, you have much more electrical needs, then you need to
size your system to support your needs. Recommend you read Nigel Calder's
book (or equivalent).
I have a Cape Dory 30. I have refrigeration, auto-pilot, navigation and
cabin lights, pressure water, GPS, and VHF, resulting sometimes daily
requirements approaching 100 amps. There is no way two group 24's could
begin to handle that. I have a house bank consisting of three group 31 (105
amps each) AGM's, and a single group 31 AGM as my starting battery. To feed
this monster, I installed a Balmar high output 75 amp alternator and 3 stage
regulator in place of the old Motorola 55 amp automotive alternator that
came with the engine. I also have a 100 watt Siemens solar panel dedicated
to the house bank. This seems to be sufficient.
Good Luck.
