William,
1- If you have the room put in pairs of 6V golf cart batteries. I think the size of each is 7" W 10" L 11"H .
Golf cart batteries are true deep cycle traction batteries.
You will need to make a cable(s) to join the pairs to get 12 volts. 220A. per pair. The batteries sell for about $50 apiece.
Now the really bad news: the 6 golf cart batteries we have on our boat are just over 12 years old and still going.
2- The faster you run the engine the better the cooling for the alternator.
3- Not a good idea to mix flooded and gell cells. Both have different chargeing demands.
4- For good reading try.
