Subject: [worldcruising] Battery charging and Batteries

Hello group,
I have three questions about batteries. At this
point, I have a very simple battery system - "off-1-2-both"
with two 12v group 24 (85 ah) batteries (seavolt 675 - dual purpose).
I use one for cranking and the other as a house bank. No
fancy inverters or charger, I just run my engine every
10 days or so to charge my batteries.
1- My house bank is dead or dying. Any recomendations for
a good, resonable group 24 deep cycle battery?
2- When I charge the batteries with the engine, does it
charge any faster or better if charged at a higher rpm. Is it
better to charge at 1500 rpm vs. 1000 rpm. It seems the
less rpm you use the less diesel fuel used?
3- Is there a problem in my set up mixing regular batteries
with sealed gel cell batteries and different ah's? My
neighbor has a little used "Interstate sealed gel - 75 ah"
battery that he'll sell me cheap for my house bank. Is
there a problem having a house bank 75 ah sealed gel
cell and a cranking 85 ah dual purpose regular battery.
Thanks very much for your answers in advance.
