Suspicion confirmed!
For years I've had ongoing discussions with boaters about the use of
"Penaten Cream" as antifouling on exposed metal parts. Penaten Cream
is a German made Baby Ointment consisting mostly of Zinc Oxide in a
Lanolin Base. It works well for me on shaft, rudder post and prop. It
is readily available in Canada, but not in the U.S.
Some American boaters tried to use other Zinc Oxide based cream
(Petroleum/Vaseline based) as antifouling, thinking that the Zinc
Oxide is the active part. However they had bad or so-so results.
I began to think that it isn't the Zinc Oxide, but the cream base
that actually does the work. Well, your post has confirmed this
suspicion. Since I have a goodly amount of anhydrous Lanolin on my
boat (I use it as an anti-seizing agent on nuts and bolts, thread
sealant, corrosion block, heavy duty skin cream for myself etc), I
shall now try it on exposed underwater parts next time I haul
Scaramouche.

P.s: Since I have to buy my Lanolin in purified medicinal grade from
the drug store, it is too expensive to coat the entire boat – unless
I could find a cheaper source of the "raw" stuff. Any thoughts anyone?
