There is a lot of very good advice in the replys to your message. So
all I have to offer here is a couple of comments. As for the higher
voltage anchor windlass, you can purchase DC converters to charge the
higher voltage batteries with, there by not needing to run your
engine and not restricting the voltage that you choose. The POWER
required to run your windlass will be the same (P=IE) no matter what
the voltage choosen. Batteries in the chain locker will be hard to
service, so my guess is that they will not recieve the attention
require.

As for Hydraulics, this is a good source of power. Question is do you
drive it with your engine? Or an electric motor? Both methodes are
efective, but very in-efficent. Another problem with hydraulics is
that most systems are not made for marine applications meaning that
they rust badly. Most hydraulic systems (pumps, valves, cylinders,
etc) are made from malable materials. If you find a marine type
system you need to have very deep pockets to afford it.

So I choose to stick with a 555 tiger windlass and manuelly crank in
my rode and anchor... And you are correct it is a chore when you have
let out 150 to 200 feet of chain. It makes for a very good workout.
But then what cruiser does not need a good workout now and then to
keep him in shape;o)
