Actually, the Ray 152 SSB is fully capable of transmitting on HAM
(amateur HF) frequencies according to the HAM I spoke to who
works in Raytheon's support. Just not marketed that way for
various reasons, it is sold as a "commercial marine SSB" and is a
very good radio.

You cannot legally use any radio's HAM capabilities if you do not
have a HAM license except in an emergency situation. You cannot
use a Marine SSB "type approved" radio to transmit unless it is
installed on a boat, which means you can't legally power up a
marine SSB at home and test transmissions, HAM license or not,
HAM capable or not, on any frequency whatsoever. In other words,
Icom 710 or Ray 152, you officially can't use either one as a
home based HAM nor as a home based marine SSB, although I'm not
sure how anybody would know if you did use one as a home HAM if
you have a HAM license. The exception to that statement - if you
get a special land station license you can use the Marine
frequencies from a land location.

In speaking with Icom and Raytheon and dealers and etc. both
radios were highly regarded (and Icom and Raytheon respected each
other's equipment).

The Ray is typically about $1000 more than the Icom 710, but the
Ray comes with an antenna coupler/tuner and the cable to connect
the radio to the coupler which reduces the difference a good bit.

The Raytheon is the model installed on USCG boats (big ships have
super-duper 1000 watters), Customs vessels, NOAA vessels, etc. It
is on tons of commercial fishing vessels. The Icoms are also
hugely popular and there are (of cuff guess) probably a good
number more Icoms in service because every marine supply store in
the world can sell them and the Icom product line has carryover
from other consumer radio areas. Raytheon has their microwave,
commercial GMSDSS (or whatever that acronym) and naval/warfare
communications systems at that end of the spectrum.

I just bought a Ray 152. I'll have more to report soon.

Which system is the better one to go with. The ICOM 710 or the
Raymarine 152 ssb. Does anyone have any experience with these? I
understand the Ray 152 ssb only uses the Marine SSB freq were as
        the
ICOM 710 is used both with the Marine SSB and Ham frequencies as
well. Can anyone help me with this decision. Thanks. John
