1. Re: Singlehanding Coastal, Techniques
Midship Cleats: We have had very good success using a single dock line from our
cockpit sheet winch. When the boat comes to a stop with the dock cleat just
abeam the transom, the resulting line of action from dock cleat to cockpit winch
gives just the right amount of tendency to pull her nicely parallel to the dock.
And, doing it a time or two means that we know how long to set the lines and
where the boat will end up when she stops. Leave it in gear and take you time
about running the rest of the lines ashore.
Roth anchoring: Yes, what I do is to flake out the amount of cable I expect to
need and cleat it off at the bow. When I drop the hook over the stern it pays
out fine and snubs the boat up as others have described.
Roth Up-Anchoring: I pull the hook up over the transom. This allows me to get
underway with the boat pointed dead downwind. This, in turn, usually allows me
to get some way on the boat even before I get canvas up, as the wind playing
over the dodger and other top hamper is usually good for a half knot or so of
steerage way. Of course, I wouldn't do this if I were anchored on a lee shore,
as this would have me heading straight in to the beach, but then I avoid lee
shores as best I can <g>. Indeed, with a self steering vane and the stern hook
I can get underway very nicely with no engine and nobody on the helm.
Note that with this application I never carry anchors the length of the boat: My primary (bower?) anchor lives at the stern pulpit full time.
Windlass: And the final benefit of the stern anchoring technique is the savings
in windlass. Rather than spent yet another thousand on a winch, it occurs to me
that the Barients in the cockpit are as good as any windlass made. With the
fairleads aimed properly, it is no problem for me to recover anchor cable using
the sheet winches, i.e. from the cockpit. I do use a rope w/ one shot of chain
rode, so this makes it feasible - couldn't do this with an all chain rode. And
when recovering off the stern the last 25 feet (the chain) is rather a nuisance.
