The way Hal explained it, he would flake down the length of rode he wanted
out and cleat it at that point. That meant he never had to tend the anchor
at all.

That's a bit too optimistic for me. When I've done this, I've only flaked
out enough line to ensure the anchor would set; then I've gone to the bow
and veered sufficient rode for the conditions.

BTW, I have not done this maneuver with my "normal" (Bruce 44#) anchor. I
use a 14# Fortress, which is much easier to walk forward and aft. It's also
adequate to hold my boat in a sandy or muddy bottom.
