I often singlehand Pelican, a 34 foot sloop home-built
off one of Charlie Morgan's Heritage hulls. It's
powered by a 9.9HP Yamaha outboard making maneauvering
(especially backing down) a challenge even with crew.
Others have already covered the major points of close
quarters handling. I have only one thing to add...
well... maybe two. Sometimes it's hard to avoid
entering a slip with wind or current dead on your
stern. For those occasions, I keep an anchor on the
stern rail with line cleated and ready to pay out.
I'll line up with the slip, drop the anchor to slow
(and/or stop) the boat, then ease her into the slip. A
trip line on the anchor makes recovery less of a PITA
than it might be. Second tip? Don't be embarassed to
circle in and call for help before making your final
approach. Dock gawkers LOVE to help. Maybe you'll make
someone's day :-)
