Calder misses the obvious, a hydraulic windlass.
Even 24 VDC is a "band-aid" solution for a windlass, IMHO.
Way back when, large, over the road trucks sometimes used a 12/24 system.
Power contactors were used to connect the 12 VDC, 8D batteries in series
to provide 24VDC to the cranking motor to start the engine, then
reconnected in parallel to provide a 12 VDC operating system that was
recharged by a 12 VDC alternator system.
It was a very "clunky" (That's a hitech engineering term <G>) system at
best.
The marketplace decided keeping the engine running all winter long in
cold climates was a better solution.
Lighthouse has a great windlass and a pretty decent electric motor to
operate it, but mine will be hydraulic with a manual override.
