Actually, a powered version of the SL555 is what I have. Don't remember the
model name, as it's long out of production. Normally, I use the motor to
pick up chain (or rope/chain), but I can manually use a winch handle if the
motor isn't up to the task.

The unit is actually a bit light for my boat; I originally bought it on sale
when I thought I was going to buy a Pacific Seacraft 34. So, I already
owned the windlass when I got Capella. So far, I've never needed it to
kedge, and it's been perfectly adequate at picking up my anchor. Once, in
Nova Scotia, the anchor came up attached to a very fouled transmission! So
the motor has more than enough power for "normal" anchoring duties.

BTW, the current issue of SAIL has an article by Nigel Calder about 24 volt
systems. He starts out by saying that boats with high-amp motors, like
windlasses, have only two choices: a very large cable running the length of
the boat, or 24 volt. I strongly recommend the system on my boat. I have a
Group 24 battery on a shelf as close to the motor as possible. A very small
battery charger is next to it. The battery charger is hard-wired to my AC
side.

Prior to picking up my anchor, I start the engine and turn on the inverter.
The inverter powers the battery charger, providing a charge to the battery,
which is connected to the windlass motor with 8 gauge wire. It's a very
simple system that avoids the pitfalls of high-amp DC loads. And it's a
hell of a lot simpler (and cheaper) than setting up a separate 24 volt DC
side.
