Right guy, right event, wrong boat. Red Shoes was loaned by Pacific
Seacraft to Herb and Nancy Payson for 10 years. They returned her about 4
years ago, and she was re-sold. Dunno who has her now.
When Hal Roth recounted the story to my sailing club, he mentioned the other
key element - that the reef he hit was mis-charted. The chart he was using
was wrong, showing the reef on the opposite side of the island to where it
really was. Another hazard of sailing in remote areas.

If I was to do it again, I'd take the Lighthouse 1501, which is a very
heavy-duty horizontal windlass, which can be configured for gypsy or drum or
both on either side. In addition, they come with a very low gear for
kedging, which is driven by a winch handle on the top of the windlass case.
Would have suited your Rosie Roads grounding perfectly.

Agreed. I firmly believe in KISS. Sometimes, though, those power-assisted
devices make it all work. Good to have backups, though.
