Subject: Re: [worldcruising] Singlehanding Coastal, Techniques

Hi Web,
Some months ago I bought my first yacht, and was faced
with singlehanding for the first time. I asked much
the same questions as you...
Hal Roth's system is sound, I'm sure, especially if
you don't have an engine and need to anchor under
sail, but I find it quite a chore bringing my heavy
CQR, and chain rode, back to the cockpit. I have a lot
of gear back there, and its a lot of bother and
mucking about for someone of my limited experience. I
like to keep my worries to a minimum.
Someone suggested that I don't worry too much about
technique. So I don't. I drop and secure all sails,
motor in, find exactly where I want to anchor. Put the
engine in neutral, walk forward, drop the anchor until
it hits bottom, let the boat drift back a ways with
the tide or wind (so I don't pile chain on top of the
anchor and risk fouling), pay out the rest of the
rode, secure it, walk back to the cockpit, set the
anchor with the engine... Not pretty, you won't get
cooing compliments over the VHF, but you also won't
break a sweat... I've made a few lousy anchoring
decisions, having to haul it up and try again, but
that's a matter of poor judgement which can't be
blamed on my anchoring technique.
So far, not once have I had no one to help with lines
while berthing or docking. Maybe it's the area where I
sail. People come running to help. Just their way.
I suggest one thing, though. Get to know your engine
and how your boat reacts under power. I grew up around
boats, sailed centreboarders and fin-keelers all my
life, but wasn't ready for how my deep-keel sailboat
manoeuvred under power. Had a bad near-miss simply
because the boat reacted in a way I never expected.
First time, go out with a friend, play with the
engine, find someplace to practice berthing/docking.
Try to apply the advice already offered. Figure out
how you will handle a singlehanded situation before
you are faced with it... and, of course, know which
direction and how fast the tide is running before you
arrive.
Cheers,
Jim
