In heavy air, if the halyard lets go you can lose the whole luff. Better to
remove some slugs below the gate so that the lowest one is above the gate,
and leave the gate closed. That slug, and the others at the battens and
headboard should be "Proctor" slugs (large-black & heavy-duty).
