There are some boats that don't have any radios, or don't turn them on, but
I think you are right and we do depend heavily on voice communication. I
don't know if there is the equivalent of a TTY for a radio or not. Or
maybe voice recognition software for it. You can of course get weather via
fax in visual form, but I haven't learned to do that yet, so can't tell you
much about it. Can you speak? Can you tell how intelligible you would be
over a radio?

Hams do have a ham email setup, but I don't know that this would be
immediate enough for your needs.

There are lots of non-specific lists. On yahoo is the world_women_cruisers
list (but they will allow males to participate), the ChesapeakeCruising,
list, the SafeCruising list and the Workaboard list. Most of these are
relatively inactive.

Two very active lists are the live-aboard list out of Canada,
