We never considered going north from the Bahamas. The folks we spoke with
advised our route for two reasons. One, you're not immeditely heading far
away from land. And two, when you do head east, you're sailing the shortest
possible distance. Sailing the shortest route is always wise, as you minimize
the time you're "exposed." To weather, gear failure, sickness, other
vessels, floating hazards.

As far as due south (Route 66) from Bermuda, the advice I read says that if
you do, you run the risk of winding up in Puerto Rico, if the wind goes
south. When we finally made our passage to the VI from Norfolk, we left
Bermuda 30 miles to port, but kept heading southeast, finally turning south
at about 62W. That was wise, as it turned out we were hard on the wind the
last couple of days before landfall. This was mid-November 1998; our passage
was a week after the ill-fated Caribbean 1500 ran into Mitch -- there wasn't
much wind in the western Atlantic.

I have friends who, on their way to England, sailed from St. John to Bermuda.
They did this in April, and I believe they said thet was the best time. I
think it's a fairly common route when going east.
