John, I don't know if this helps but here is what I am using:
1. I have an email account with www.networksolutions.com At any of
the dozens of cyber cafes up and down the islands (great part about
these is they invariably serve rum) with about 3 keystrokes I log
into my mailbox. I can then download to floppy or connect my
notebook using a crossover LAN cable. I usually just use floppy. On
Union Island earlier this year I was consistently making connections
at 56K. I don't know if you are yet aware but Nimrods in Woburne has
a Bar and Communications Centre now!
2. I have my notebook set up with Outlook Express. Although I have
outlook and any other number of readers Express offers speed and
convenience. On Express in Options/Accounts etc. I have the POP
servers for Sailmail, Network Solutions, Hotmail, Inmarsat C and
Inmarsat M and my wifes accounts all set up. Thus whenever the
notebook goes on-line I can either sync all accounts or selectively.
I also have a file size max set so people who send me HTML or
pictures are screened out and remain in the server until it is
convenient.
3. As you don't seem to want Inmarsat C so be it. But I believe for
the "free" weather and search stuff that comes down it is mandatory.
Yes, messaging is expensive but getting cheaper.
4. I cancelled Compuserve when they started pulling the plug on some
of the island servers and modem banks.
5. I have a Nokia 7110 (GSM) phone card which works in the French
Islands for direct dial to Network Solutions from the boat.
6. Sailmail is working VERY well. You should look at it. I have a
cruising friend (Loon) who checks in exclusively on Sailmail. I am
not that brave. The new Halifax station is almost a sure hit.
If I can help in anyway please let me know.
