[worldcruising] Goodbye AOL and a question

I've had an AOL account since I was able to get on the 'net. I suffered
through being called an "AOL" [g] by the Compuserve boys in the early days,
hanging in there so as to have local access in the Eastern Caribbean, which I
did enjoy.

It's gone! Aside from the VI and PR, only Sint Maarten, Gualeloupe and
Martinique have local access numbers in the EC. Of course it's possible to
call the local number on those islands, but that can be a hassle.

Friends, who cruised there last season with Pocketmail, said it didn't work
well. Of course, it's difficult to find a working 'phone, so no wonder.

I know about Iridium and Globalstar, but it just doesn't seem worthwhile for
6 months a year. And I don't want Inmarsat type domes on the boat. And using
HF or HAM is a hassle, too.

All I want to do is get my email once a week or so as I cruise up or
down-island. Seems like using Hotmail at cybercafes is my fate. That's OK,
'cause it's the best place to meet other cruisers, outside of an anchorage.

However, is anyone cruising in the islands who has a good ISP with local
access numbers?

John
