Yes the plan is to desecrate Hog Island with a hotel resort.
For those who don't know Hog Island is IMHO the nicest, safest
anchorage in the southern Caribbean. It is a small, 12 acre island
surrounded on 3 sides by a barrier reef with a lagoon between the
island and the mainland of Grenada. It is at about 61o40'W and
12o00'N. It is low enough that you always have a breeze but not a
ripple on the water. The bottom is blue clay and once the hook is
down you simply are not moving. It is also thought to have been the
first landing spot in the Caribbean as the Arawak Indians made their
way north from mainland South America. Pottery shards can still be
found all over the island. It is also the site of the famous Roger
the Rasta Bar which you have to see to appreciate.
About 3 - 4 years ago it was purchased from a Grenadian family by a
hotel chain. My memory may be faulty here but I think it was SAS
which owns Radisson. They also bought a very large piece of the
mainland side. On the mainland will go a golf course and on Hog will
be the hotel. They will bridge the Hog Island cut to allow traffic.
Of course as there is no beach on Hog they will probably have to
blast and fill the reef. As of February there was insufficient power
on the island to support a hotel. I have no idea how big a diesel
generator or 2 it will need but the island had barley enough to
support current needs. Perhaps this has since been resolved.
As of about 2 weeks ago I was told some preliminary work has in fact
begun. Too bad.
