It will work, but there's a catch.

A lot of storms, as they move off the East Coast, take the Gulf Stream
north. You have a better than even chance of getting a wild ride,
especially if the winds oppose the current. Pilot charts won't necessarily
show this ... remember the information on them is from actual reports from
mariners, and mariners have a tendency to avoid bad weather, so the charts
understate the probablity of weather problems.

There are some US Navy sites (sorry, I don't have the URLs handy, but can
get them later) that show the gulf stream, and also have sattelite images of
the Western Atlantic. If you overlay the two, you'll often see storm cells
following the stream's track.
