Is it an option to register your boat with an other flag.
May have to set up a company off shore to qualify.

To all of the interested Folks concerned about insurance offshore.
I had requested a comment from the one or two major Companies that handle
Yacht Insurance as to WHY DON'T THEY COVER U.S. AND CANADIAN VESSELS:
------------------------------------------------
Here is a considered reply that still needs further research here in the
U.S.:
"Dear Capt Wittig Sr,
Thanks for your email. I am pleased to provide a reply to your queries.
1. Underwriters consider that liability claims in relation to US flagged
vessels are more frequent and more expensive to settle/defend.
2. The US a is not a signatory to international conventions which limit
liability of boat owners.
3. European underwriters are less familiar with US court procedures which
can vary from state to state.
I hope this answers your queries.
Regards.
Gentlemen/Ladies:
Thank you for your response. Quite a few of us over here would like to be
more informed concerning the reasons for your firm (Lloyd's seems to be
going that way also) not taking cover for U.S. yachts.
Could you please give a few reasons with specifics. Is it US law and our
very large settlements? Has Admiralty law as it relates to U.S. yachts been
cancelled? Does Admiralty Court in Europe treat U.S. Yachts differently
(larger settlements) than EU Yachts? Has Admiralty law been cancelled as it
relates to U.S. yachts?
It has been my experience (not an insurance expert) that long term cruisers
are VERY safe to insure. They are knowledgeable, live on the vessel, are
concerned about their life so they maintain vessel to a high safety state
(not necessarily to a high visual state), and lastly are proud of their
capability and life-style.
Any education that you could impart would be appreciated. As my application
stated, I am the Governor of the State of Florida Commercial Boaters
Representative and sit on the Boating Advisory Council with two senior
legislators and the Top law enforcement officers in the State.
Thank you for your considered response.
Capt. Richard J. Wittig Sr.
S/V Shazam"
