sailors
wishing to credit mileage towards tickets keep a personal log in Australia
as well. Each passage is signed off by the skipper. The time at sea only
counts if under supervision of a suitably qualified skipper. For a trans
Pacific one need a "Foreign going level one" skipper in charge. So most of
my singe handed sailing does not count.
I have had crew accumulate 100's of miles with weekend sailing. For a level
V skippers ticket they need two years sailing (in days not miles and they
can count pleasure sailing for 50%.
The hard part is getting twelve months paid commercial sailing.
Unfortunately every sailor and his dog is trying the same thing, so it means
almost begging for jobs on any commercial tub. Booze cruises etc. Never the
less, two of my old crew have persevered and become level IV skippers of
square riggers

Luis,
I have kept a personal log book for years as per issued by the old Cruising
Assn. of South Africa. It has always been needed when undertaking
examinations to prove mileage sailed and lately for applying for a skipper
position. If you want a copy of the form, I will save it as an Acrobat PDF
file and send it to you.

Hello,
Every time I read a book, magazine article or whatever document related to
sailing, written by a sailor, the author's curriculum is always expressed in
thousand miles he has sailed, plus a few more achievments of his carreer.
-How can one prove the miles he has sailed?
-Is there a personal log book for this purpose, or do they prove their
mileage by referring to their boat's navigation diary?
-Even if there is a personal log book, what makes it a believable proof of
the achievments? a port authority stamp?
Best regards,
Luis
