Hi Graham, I think John is probably correct about the cooler
leaking,
if it is raw water cooled. If the engine is FWC(I'm not familiar with
the MD7a)it very likely is the head gasket. If it is the gasket you
would probably need to run the engine long enough to get it up to
operating temp. for the gasket to leak(usually). I suspect that it
is
RWC or you would have mentioned that your coolant was low also. The
other problem you mentioned is the blow back through the air cleaner.
This is not normal and not good. Most likely valve(s).By the way,
with FWC engines you can get a kit to check for exhaust gases in the
coolant to determine if you have a gasket problem, don't know if
there
would be a way to do this with RWC or not, maybe someone else has had
