A couple of days ago I checked the oil on my ageing MD7a and found the
level higher than expected the consistency about the same as grey milk.
Had been sailing about a week earlier when everything seemed OK. Hmmm, I
thought (or words to that effect), looks like a head gasket gone or water
siphoned back in through the exhaust.
Took off the rocker cover and found globules of water inside it.
Making the assumption that the water siphoned in (easier than taking the
head off) I changed the oil and filter a couple of times with a short run
of the engine after each change. The engine started with no problems each
time and appears to run OK.
The oil looks OK so far but I've left it to settle overnight to see if
there's any water in the bottom.
If there is, then it looks like the head gasket.
One thing I noticed when I ran the engine was that there seems to be some
"exhaust" coming out of the air cleaner (ie it is sucking AND blowing!). I
am only new to the mysteries of diesels but this seems abnormal to me.
Does it sound like a stuck or ill-seating inlet valve? The engine starts,
idles and revs smoothly and only very light whispy white smoke from the
exhaust.
Any suggestions on the "S and B" problem greatly appreciated. Also any
suggestions as to how to confirm that the head gasket is at fault without
going to the length of pulling the head off? Are there any other ways,
that I haven't thought of, that water could be getting in?
